Domains and Small Business

Does this happen to you? I just met an interesting fellow at a networking session in Sydney and we exchanged business cards. One thing that I don’t understand is the acceptance/insistance  of many small businesses to use an xyz@bigpond.com email address and display in on their marketing. Why? A business card is a marketing tool for YOUR business. Has anybody ever considered that when they do this they are simply advertising someone elses product? Has anybody ever considered that when they do this they are PAYING TO ADVERTISE SOMEONE ELSE’S PRODUCT?. I even saw a xyz@bigpond.com email address sign written on a car the other day. Wow!

Personalised domains are a great marketing tool -and they are cheap. The car I saw the other day had a phone number and the email address beneath it. In the traffic there is no chance that the phone number can be recalled by a potential customer. Imagine the sign Bee’s Knee’s Kitchens 0298905627 flashing past you. You’ll probably catch the Bee’s Knee’s Kitchens but you’ll never recall the number later. Imagine now seeing www.beeskneeskitchens.com.au or sales@beeskneeskitchens.com.au. For my mind, its a no brainer.

A .com.au domain can cost around $50 to register for 2 years. I’d be willing to bet that it will be less than that to renew in 2 years time. You need to have it hosted and costs will depend on whether you have a website attached to it or not but typically hosting ranges from $10 – $20 per month.

Some other benefits:

  • It doesn’t matter which ISP you use. It can be an email address for life.
  • Like a 1300 number it is a marketing tool that tells the world that you are serious about what you do.
  • It reinforces your name on your letterhead, business card, car, street signage.
  • It is an easier way for your customers to recall you down the track or any time.

There appears to be a misconception that domains are tricky to set up also. Not so. Telcotalk can arrange domains and manage them on you behalf. You don’t have to do anything other than come up with a name and give us a call to start the ball rolling. We will confirm it’s availability straight away and within 24hrs you will be up and running. For more information give us a call or email your questions to domains@telcotalk.com.au

Till next time
